Review

I don't want to ruffle any feathers... but Final Fantasy 7 is good. Mechanically it's kind of whatever you make of it; it's a very easy game, but this leaves the door open for interesting player-created challenge runs, and I think that's rad. All I've done is a no-magic run, which is relatively straightforward but I had a good time with it. I think the writing is genuinely good, although it was hard to appreciate fully in 1998 with the rushed localization. I understand the story much better after playing with the Reunion fan re-translation mod. Even in 1998, I felt more for these characters than I have in most other games. Sure, the plot is anime melodrama, but it's a good example of it. I feel like FF7 gets a bad rap for inspiring a bunch of awful anime melodrama copycats, but I don't think it's fair to hold that against it. Unfortunately, this entry is when Final Fantasy entered its "minigame hell" phase. At least most of the minigames only have to be endured once, but I lose a little bit of patience for them every time I replay this game. Still solid overall though.
