Scrolling shoot-em-ups don't normally interest me enough to finish them. Gleylancer is a rare exception. Getting hit only knocks your weapon down a level, and you only lose a life if you get hit after being knocked back down to level 1. This is much more fair than most games in this genre, in which getting hit once means instant death and potentially losing a fully powered-up weapon. (edit: I just jumped into the game to confirm and this may not be true? I thought there was something that lets you take multiple hits but maybe not. Not sure what it is about this game that made me able to finish it.) This game also has an option for letting your ship automatically shoot, which is how it should be. There's no reason to ever not be shooting, why should you have to hold a button the entire time you play? Excellent design, and it looks great too.
