Like Word Munchers, this is a pretty bad game that has an outsized role in my imagination, because it was a game I got to play in school, and any video game is better than anything else that could be happening in school. This game mostly plays itself. There are only a handful of meaningful decisions to make, and success or failure mostly comes down to random chance. I don't feel like it was very educational, because I never played it as part of a bigger lesson about northwest expansion in the US and didn't have the context to understand why it was important. This goes without saying for a children's game from 1985, but it completely whitewashes the settler colonialism that's occurring and doesn't seem concerned with the genocide of the indigenous population. I don't expect the game to talk about these things, but the total absence of context makes playing it today kind of uncomfortable.
