Review

Before the Rhythm Heaven series, every rhythm game was about interacting with a UI: symbols move on a track, and you have press the button when the symbols overlap with matching symbols, to the rhythm of the music. Rhythm Tengoku is a collection of minigames that incorporate rhythm seamlessly into the mechanics, without the need for an abstraction layer. The game eschews complicated multi-button systems and strips the rhythm game to its bare essence: the majority of games are played with only a single button, or at most, three (the entire D-pad serves as the "left button". One minigame also uses the B button.) The result redefined what a rhythm game can be, for the better. The music is great and the art and game design is endlessly charming. This game is magical.
