Review

The speed with which you move across the map is infuriatingly slow. They do away with the excellent inventory system from Mario 3, so my strongest memory of this game is tediously trudging back across the map to the Top Secret Zone every time I want a power-up. Maybe the game is less memorable because they replaced the cool unique zones like Big World, Sky World and Pipe World with "Video Game Platform World" and "Video Game Platform World But Now You're In A Forest". They also got rid of all the unique power-ups like the frog suit and tanuki suit and replaced them with Yoshi. You can give Yoshi power-ups by eating differently-colored turtle shells, but this effect is rare and doesn't last long enough. All that said, this game introduces the secret exits. Finding all the levels, finishing Star Road and 100%ing the game is a great experience, so in spite of all the downgrades from SMB3, it's still a 4-heart game.
