Review

This is more in line with the kind of sequel I'd expect after Mario 3. A completely new kind of game, re-inventing the 2D platformer yet again. In an era when everyone was gung-ho about bad low-poly or pre-rendered 3D graphics, Nintendo EAD doubled down on making the most beautiful 2D game they possibly could. The sketchy "crayon" look was a uniquely lovely design choice and this is the best-looking game on the platform. It also feels fantastic. The egg-throwing takes a little getting used to, but once you switch to the "hasty" aiming option, it becomes second nature with a little bit of practice. I understand why some feel the sound that Mario makes when Yoshi gets hit is game-ruining, and I recommend using a romhack to disable it. This is among the finest Mario games.
