Review

This is my favorite arcade-style game. I wasn't even able to play it until 2022, when Rich Whitehouse released BigP, an emulator capable of running Atari Jaguar games at full speed with no glitches. I feel like the odds were against this game being good: it's on a console not known for amazing games in the first place, and Tempest is a game that should really be played with a spinner or other analog controller, but Jeff Minter somehow managed to make controlling your ship with a D-pad feel good and natural. It has just the right amount of momentum. I always love Jeff's aesthetic style, and when I get "in the zone" the rest of the world fades away, I feel one with the psychedelic synesthesia. I don't know if it's possible to "finish" this game, but I beat YAK's score on the top 10, so I figure that's a worthy goal to cross off my list.
