Review

This is a very good game in a very specific context: it's one of the only games I've enjoyed playing on my phone. It's essentially an idle game: there's no way to "fail" or for the number to go down. It's a "match-3" game that you play as quickly as possible with an RPG-flavored candy shell. Even though you're not really "doing" anything, playing effectively and having a good run can make you feel like you are. It gets you into a flow state not unlike a slot machine, which isn't the best feeling, but it sure can make time fly by on a bus or in a waiting room. Unlike a slot machine, you only have to spend $5 on it one time, so compared to some games you can play on your phone, it's pretty harmless. (another game I've compared to a slot machine in a negative way is The Binding of Isaac, but unlike that game, I never feel like my time is being wasted in YMBAB. It moves at a constant clip, which I appreciate.) Once you finish there's some "new game+" stuff which effectively requires you to grind longer to make the same amount of progress. I can't find much motivation to do this, but I occasionally find myself reinstalling it and going back through the base game after enough time has passed that it feels fresh again.
