Review

This game's an odd duck. It's an Xquel to Fatal Labyrinth, one of my favorite games. They were released around the same time, but I didn't play this until years later in emulation, because of course nobody had a Game Gear. The games are very similar, but this one is just different enough to be off-putting. The "dungeons" consist of mazes composed of a single repeated tile per level; some levels it's a tree, some levels it's a sunflower, some levels it's a moai head. This is technically more variety than FL, but it doesn't feel like you're in a place. It feels uncanny.

In Dragon Crystal, you constantly have an egg following 1 space behind you which does nothing. The egg eventually hatches into a dragon, which also does nothing. It really feels like the dragon should do something, but it's only there for you to strategically position in order to foul enemy movement. I've only finished this game once, and I didn't like it as much as Fatal Labyrinth, but maybe that's just my familiarity bias.
