For my thoughts on the early Sonic games in general, see Sonic & Knuckles. Much of what I wrote there applies, but being the first game in the series, this one is a little rough. They didn't invent the spin-dash yet, so getting up to speed when you lose momentum can be annoying. Sonic doesn't have i-frames after he hits spikes, so an annoying setback in later games is a frustrating death trap here. The bosses and level designs aren't as memorable, but the soundtrack rules. A fun game with rough spots that get ironed out in the sequels, but still worth playing.
